Management vs Management Practice?
Broadly Speaking
Management
“Management is a multi-purpose organ that manages business and manages managers and manages workers and work.” – Peter F Drucker, The Practice of Management (Harper Business)
What Are the Resources of the Business?
Company resources include all assets controlled by a company to achieve its objectives. People are just one of many resources used by a company.
Management Practice
It really is like managing your own little world. Management practice goes beyond overseeing direct reports which is why it’s possible to have management experience without directly managing a team. That’s right – there’s a good chance that you may have already honed some critical business skills in your career.
In short, management practice encompasses methods and techniques used by managers to plan, organise, lead, and control organisational activities. This includes setting goals, allocating resources, guiding employees, and making informed decisions.
And the best news? These skills count toward the minimum of three years of management experience that the Henley international MBA requires its applicants to have.
Effective management practices are vital for operational efficiency and achieving organisational objectives, successfully.
What Does Henley Mean by Management Experience?
The number of years of management experience should be evidenced by some or all of the following types of managerial activity (not in any order or priority). The following criteria are offered as a starting point for consideration.
- Demonstrable involvement in shaping managerial decisions that affect events beyond standard daily operational activities.
- Coordinating the work of others in a team.
- Responsibility for meeting financial targets that rely on the efforts of more than one person.
- A requirement to structure and order one’s work activities for more than one month to solve problems and deliver results.
- A defined responsibility for improving the performance of people, processes or technology.
- A role that primarily achieves results through influencing others rather than through direct authority.
- Experience of working internationally or of relevant multi-cultural exposure.
At Henley, management experience is a requirement for all our programmes. We specifically seek experienced managers because their knowledge dramatically improves our learning outcomes. Given that organisations today are flatter in structure and experts can be resources other than managers with project-based roles that can be globally distributed, we provide criteria to evaluate applicants on admission and then design a learning process aligned to these criteria.
